Anxiety is a normal human emotion everyone experiences at times. People feel anxious or nervous when faced with a personal problem or during public speaking for example. Anxiety disorders, on the other hand, interfere with a person’s ability to lead their daily life. There are many types including panic disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, social anxiety, specific phobias and generalized anxiety disorder. Symptoms include panic and fear, obsessive thoughts, flashbacks or nightmares, dry mouth, problems sleeping, heart palpitations, sweating, shortness of breath, numbness or tingling in hands or feet, nausea, and muscle tension.
Treatment includes psychotherapy (talk therapy) and cognitive restructuring, helping clients organize and restructure their thoughts and also teaching relaxation techniques. Therapists may consult with physicians regarding medication in some instances.
